Civil Rights Law

Civil rights law is the branch of law that deals with protecting individuals from discrimination and deprivation of their civil liberties.

The U. S. Constitution guarantees its citizens fundamental civil rights and liberties that include freedom of speech, religion and assembly, the right to bear arms, to petition the government, and to procedural due process, as well as freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures, cruel and unusual punishments, and equal protection under the law.

Over the years, state and federal legislation has expanded the scope of civil rights beyond those set forth in the Constitution, to  ensure that citizens are not discriminated against due to race, religion, age, disability, sex or national origin. Furthermore, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 established the groundwork against discrimination in public schools and colleges, prohibited employment discrimination and discrimination in federally funded programs.

You may pursue legal action to enforce your rights, if your personal liberties are denied in a wide range of situations. Civil rights cases include but are not limited to those involving:

  • Discrimination
  • Police Misconduct
  • Unlawful Search/ Seizure
  • Equal Credit
  • Fair Housing
  • Hate Crimes
  • Religious Freedom
  • Wrongful Conviction
  • Free Speech Violations
